Not every disposable mask is built for the same job. A 3-ply surgical mask protects the people and food around the wearer. A respirator such as an N95 protects the wearer from what they breathe in. Buying the wrong one wastes money, and in a clinic or on a dusty site it can leave people exposed.
This guide explains the main mask types, the standards printed on the box, and what to check before you order in bulk from a disposable mask supplier in the UAE.
Surgical masks vs respirators
The key difference is fit. A surgical mask sits loosely on the face, so air can pass around the edges. A respirator seals against the face, so most air passes through the filter.
| 3-ply surgical / medical mask | KN95 / N95 / FFP2 respirator | |
| Main job | Stops the wearer’s droplets and splashes reaching others | Filters fine particles before the wearer breathes them in |
| Fit | Loose, ear loops | Close seal around nose and mouth |
| Comfort over long shifts | Light and breathable | Warmer, more breathing effort |
| Typical standard | EN 14683 (Type I, II, IIR) | N95 (US NIOSH), KN95 (China GB 2626), FFP2 / FFP3 (EU EN 149) |
| Typical users | Clinics, kitchens, food factories, salons, offices, schools | Construction dust, sanding, some healthcare and cleaning tasks |
| Cost per piece | Low | Higher |
What the surgical mask grades mean
The European standard EN 14683 sorts medical masks into three types:
- Type I: bacterial filtration efficiency (BFE) of at least 95%. Suited to general and non-clinical use.
- Type II: BFE of at least 98%. Suited to clinical settings.
- Type IIR: BFE of at least 98%, plus splash resistance of at least 16 kPa. Suited to procedures with a risk of blood or fluid splashes.
If a box just says “3-ply” with no standard, ask for the test report. Three layers describe how the mask is built, not how well it filters.
What respirator ratings mean
- N95 filters at least 95% of airborne particles and is approved by NIOSH in the US.
- KN95 is the Chinese equivalent, rated to a similar filtration level.
- FFP2 filters at least 94% and FFP3 at least 99%, under the EU standard EN 149.
A respirator only works if it seals. Facial hair, the wrong size or a loose nose clip lets air leak around the edges. Counterfeit N95s are also common, so check the approval number against the NIOSH Certified Equipment List before you buy in bulk.
Which mask for which workplace?
| Workplace | Main risk | Mask that usually fits |
| Restaurants, bakeries, food factories | Droplets reaching food | 3-ply surgical, Type I or II |
| Clinics and dental practices | Droplets and fluid splashes | Type II or Type IIR |
| Salons and spas | Close contact, fumes from some products | 3-ply surgical |
| Cleaning teams | Splashes, dust from sweeping | 3-ply surgical, respirator for heavy dust |
| Construction and workshops | Fine dust from cutting, drilling and sanding | FFP2, KN95 or N95 |
| Schools and offices | Seasonal coughs and colds | Adult and kids’ disposable masks |
A quick word on dust. On hazy days and on dusty sites, a loose surgical mask lets fine particles in around the edges. For people working in heavy dust for hours, a sealed respirator is the better choice.
Comfort in UAE heat
Heat and humidity make masks damp quickly, and a damp mask filters less well and feels worse to wear. Plan for staff to change masks during a long shift, especially in hot kitchens or outdoors. Lighter, breathable masks with a soft ear loop make it more likely that people keep them on properly.
Bulk buying checklist
Before you place a large order, check:
- The standard and test report, not just “3-ply” or “medical grade” on the box.
- Layers and filter material. A good surgical mask has a melt-blown filter layer in the middle.
- Fit features. Look for a bendable nose wire and ear loops that don’t snap.
- Sizes. Order adult and child sizes separately if you need both.
- Packing. Boxes of 50 are common. Individually wrapped masks suit clinics and events.
- Expiry date. Ear loops and filter layers age, so check the date on each carton.
- Registration. For clinics, ask whether the product is approved for medical use in the UAE.
- Steady supply. Confirm UAE stock levels so you are not caught short when demand jumps.
Disposable or reusable?
Disposable masks are the hygienic choice for food handling, healthcare and anywhere masks get damp or soiled. Reusable masks can make sense for low-risk office use if they are washed properly. Many businesses keep both.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a surgical mask and an N95?
A surgical mask is loose-fitting and mainly stops the wearer’s droplets from reaching others. An N95 seals to the face and filters at least 95% of airborne particles the wearer breathes in.
Is KN95 the same as N95?
They are rated to a similar filtration level but certified under different standards. N95 is approved in the US and KN95 in China. Always check the certification and test report.
What does Type IIR mean on a face mask?
Type IIR masks meet EN 14683 with at least 98% bacterial filtration and resistance to fluid splashes. They are used in clinical procedures.
Do surgical masks protect against dust?
Only partly. Fine dust can get in around the edges. For heavy dust, use a sealed respirator such as FFP2, KN95 or N95.
